Michael Veale investigates how the public sector can incorporate ethics whilst designing and deploying machine learning algorithm–powered tools for purposes including fraud detection, child protection and policing. He seeks to combine and enrich computational techniques for fairness, transparency and reliability in machine learning with social tools for problem definition, foresight and evidence synthesis by working in and with the civil services implementing these technologies today.
